Dear Brothers,

We women want to acknowledge that some men value a safe learning environment where everyone's voice is valued. Furthermore, some men acknowledge that they learn best when they have close bonds with women friends in the process. On the other hand, aggressive men have been known to dominate mixed classrooms and to shut down the voices of those who disagree with them. Furthermore, some men flourish when there is competition for grades, for recognition, for scholarships, etc. Competition, of course, can be a legitimate mode for discerning and recognizing excellence. However, at times, competition can be mean-spirited and legitimate the character destruction of those regarded as "weak" or "defenseless." Under these circumstances, women generally (and men who are more sensitive) lose their voices.

Catherine of Siena Virtual College is not built on competition and the survival of the fittest; rather, it is built upon cooperation and respect for the bonding that facilitates learning in a climate of self-disclosure and vulnerability. Hence, if you, as a man, feel you would want to learn in the company of women imbued with this spirit, you are very much welcome among us. If, on the other hand, this seems like nonsense to you, please go elsewhere.
